A 50mm depth of standing water creates enough pressure to push through a 0.1mm crack.
Important: Applying a simple cement wash or bitumen coat over a leaking roof without fixing the root cause is a temporary fix at best. Within one to two monsoon seasons, the leakage returns — often worse than before.

Most homeowners and even some contractors try quick-fix solutions that do not address the underlying problem:
- Cement wash or plaster coat: Adds a thin layer over existing cracks but does not bond properly to the old surface. Water finds its way through within months.
- Bitumen painting: Traditional bitumen coatings break down under UV exposure and Bangladesh's extreme heat. They become brittle and crack within one to two years.
- Tile or brick overlay: Adding tiles on top of a leaking roof without proper membrane underneath simply traps water between layers, potentially causing more damage.
- Random patching: Applying patches where you see water inside does not fix the source. Water can travel horizontally through concrete for several meters before dripping down at a different location.

Finding the actual source of a roof leak requires systematic investigation, not guesswork. Professional leak detection involves:
- Visual roof survey: Inspecting the entire roof surface for visible cracks, damaged waterproofing, blocked drains and ponding areas.
- Water flood test: Flooding specific roof sections with water and monitoring the ceiling below to identify exactly which area is leaking.
- Core sampling: In severe cases, taking small concrete core samples to check the condition of the slab and existing waterproofing layers.
- Moisture mapping: Using moisture meters to map the extent of water penetration within the slab and identify the path water is taking.

- Surface preparation: Removing all old, failed waterproofing layers down to clean concrete. Repairing all cracks with appropriate sealants or injection grouting.
- Slope correction: Creating proper drainage slopes using screed (lightweight concrete) to ensure water flows toward drain points.
- Membrane application: Applying a proper waterproofing membrane — either cementitious coating, polyurethane liquid membrane or torch-applied bituminous membrane — depending on the specific conditions.
