Column Crack: When Is It a Serious Structural Warning?

2. Diagonal Cracks (45-Degree Angle)

Diagonal cracks on columns are the most dangerous type. They indicate shear failure, which means the column is being subjected to lateral forces it cannot resist. In earthquake-prone zones like parts of Bangladesh, diagonal column cracks are a critical warning sign.

Diagonal cracks on any column should be treated as a structural emergency. Contact a structural engineer immediately. Do not delay.

3. Horizontal Cracks

Horizontal cracks around a column, especially near beam-column joints, suggest bending stress or foundation movement. These are common in buildings where the foundation has undergone differential settlement, meaning one part of the building has settled more than another.

4. Map Cracking (Crazing Pattern)

A network of fine, shallow cracks covering the column surface is usually caused by plastic shrinkage during concrete curing. While these cracks are generally cosmetic, they can allow moisture penetration that leads to rebar corrosion over time.

The Exposed Rebar Danger

When column cracks are accompanied by exposed reinforcement bars, the situation is critical. Exposed rebar means:

  • The concrete cover has failed, removing protection from the steel
  • Corrosion is actively occurring, reducing the rebar cross-section
  • The column's load-carrying capacity is diminishing over time
  • Rust expansion creates additional internal pressure, accelerating concrete spalling

In the humid, saline climate of coastal Bangladesh, rebar corrosion progresses rapidly once the concrete cover is compromised. A column that looks moderately damaged on the surface may have lost 20 to 40 percent of its reinforcement capacity due to hidden corrosion.

Crack Width Thresholds: A Quick Guide

Structural engineers use crack width as a primary indicator of severity:

  • Under 0.2mm (hairline): Generally cosmetic. Monitor for growth.
  • 0.2mm to 0.5mm: Needs investigation. Could be structural or environmental.
  • 0.5mm to 1.0mm: Significant concern. Professional assessment mandatory.
  • Over 1.0mm: Structural distress likely. Immediate action required.
  • Over 2.0mm with displacement: Critical. May require evacuation and emergency shoring.

Crack width alone does not tell the full story. A 0.3mm diagonal crack on a column is far more dangerous than a 2mm vertical crack on a non-load-bearing wall.

When Should You Evacuate?

Consider immediate evacuation and contact a structural engineer if you observe any of the following:

  • Multiple columns on the same floor showing diagonal cracks
  • Concrete pieces falling or spalling from column surfaces
  • Visible bending or bulging of a column
  • Cracks that are rapidly growing (measurable change within days)
  • Sounds of cracking or popping from structural members
  • Doors and windows suddenly becoming difficult to open or close
  • Visible tilting of the building or floor level changes

What Can Be Done?

If a structural engineer confirms the cracks are serious but the building is repairable, common interventions include:

  • Column jacketing: Adding a reinforced concrete or steel jacket around the column to increase capacity
  • Carbon fiber wrapping: High-strength fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping for critical columns
  • Epoxy injection: Sealing and bonding fine structural cracks
  • Load redistribution: Temporary shoring while permanent repairs are made

The repair method depends entirely on the cause and severity. Never attempt to repair a structural column crack with plaster, putty, or surface fillers. These conceal the problem without fixing it.
